Dell Vostro V13 Introduced

Dell today introduced its latest business thin-and-light, the Vostro V13. Measuring 0.65-0.78 inches thin, it features a 13.3-inch display and has a starting weight of 3.5 pounds. The Dell LCD is 13.3-inch diagonal LED-backlit HD (1366 x 768) glossy screen. The chassis is brushed aluminum. It is available with Intel Celeron/Core 2 Solo/Core 2 Duo ULV processors with 1.2-1.4GHz clock speeds. It has one RAM slot for expansion up to 4GB. The 30Wh 6-cell li-ion battery is not user-replaceable; Dell claims it can power the system for 4.75 hours. Available operating systems include Windows XP/Vista/7 and Ubuntu Linux.
The Dell Vostro V13 is available today starting at $449; Windows models start at $599.

Dell Studio 17 2009 Review

Dell Studio 17 is a 17-inch multimedia and gaming desktop-replacement notebook from Dell. This system can be configured with Intel Core i7 processors as well as high-end ATI Mobility Radeon graphics cards to compete against powerhouse systems like the Acer Aspire 8940G or Asus G51J. Dell Studio 17 is the first large consumer notebook to offer an optional multitouch display.
This laptop is the new Studio 17 (1747) (different than the last year) which uses a completely new chassis with 16:9 ratio widescreen display, new speakers, and support for the latest processors.

The 17.3-inch display on the Studio 17 looks above average with good color saturation and excellent contrast. Dell picked an in-between resolution of 1600×900 in this model, which is better than WXGA but still less than the 1080P displays that are standard on almost all competing models. With that said Dell does offer RGB-LED display upgrade options for this model where none of the competing models offer similar displays.

LCD screen. The NP8760 has a 17.3-inch LED-backlit screen with a 1080p resolution (1920×1080). The display is quite beautiful – it has ample brightness and stark contrast. The display’s glossy surface helps bring out colors and improves clarity at the expensive of glare and reflections. The backlighting is even with only a tiny bit of bleed at the edges. Viewing angles are very good as well – the horizontal is nearly perfect and there is a generous vertical range. Watching movies and playing video games are enjoyable activities on this display; it is one of the higher-quality panels.

Walmart will be offering the eMachines eME627-5279 15.6-inch laptop for only $198 USD (regular price $349 USD) on Black Friday, November 27, 2009. I have checked the website and it seams the least expensive laptop available online was HP Pavillion G60-519WM (Does “WM” stand for “Walmart”? ) with the same 15.6″ LCD screen.
The eME627-5279 is based on the AMD Athlon 64 TF-20 single core processor at 1.6GHz, the ATI Radeon HD 3200 integrated graphics, 2GB o DDR2 memory, a 160GB hard drive, a DVD burner. The 15.6″ display has a resolution of 1366×768 pixels.

The affordable eMachines notebook also sports stereo speakers, 802.11b/g WiFi, an Ethernet LAN port, two USB ports, a 5-in-1 media card reader, and a VGA output.

With its standard 6-cell battery for an average of 2.5 hours of battery life, the eMachines eME627-5279 weighs 6 pounds.

At the special sub-$200 price, the laptop will be sold exclusively in Walmart stores.

Laptopping.com is presenting a fresh release of Lenovo’s ThinkPad X100 netbook rumors.
Lenovo is going to release the ThinkPad X100e, a 11.6-inch AMD-based ultraportable business laptop, according to leaked specifications.

Along with the AMD Athlon Neo MV40 1.6GHz single-core processor, RS780 chipset, and the 11.6-inch 1366×768 display (LED ThinkPad screen, I most suspect), the ThinkPad X100e includes up to 4GB of RAM, up to 320GB of hard drive space, a 3- or 6-cell battery for up to 5.1 hours of run time, optional 3G and GPS receivers, a full-size keyboard with trackpoint, a multi-touch trackpad.

The 3-pound mini-notebook also sports a 0.3MP web camera and microphone, stereo speakers, 802.11 WiFi, Gigabit LAN port, optional Bluetooth, three USB ports, a 4-in 1 media card reader, and a VGA port.

The laptop will will be available in black, white, or red, and will start at $449 US reportedly. There’s no info on availability date.

I have stumbled upon a Toshiba Satellite T100 series laptop. I think it is a reasonable portable notebook with LED display – the “thin-and-light with longer battery life” type. Spes are from Toshiba site:

Along with the multi-touch enabled 17.3-inch LED backlight display, the multimedia-oriented Studio 17 features an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, the GMA 4500MHD integrated or the ATI Radeon 4570/4650 dedicated graphics, up to 4GB of DDR3 memory, up to 1TB of hard drive storage using two 500GB HDDs, a DVD burner, Blu-ray Combo drive, or Blu-ray burner.

ASUS to buy Toshiba’s notebook business?

ASUS is trying to increase notebook market share and allegedly has talked to Toshiba about buying its notebook business. Toshiba meanwhile occupies fifth place both worldwide and in the US and only considers netbooks a small portion of its business, as most of its sales focus on regular and often large notebooks.A move of the sort would be the second major consolidation in notebooks following Acer’s buyouts of Gateway and Packard Bell. It may create pressure on Dell and Lenovo and could also have an impact on Toshiba’s sagging influence on the American market, where Apple is its immediate rival.
